Putting an end to months of speculation, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have finally released the name of their baby daughter.
Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, now fourth in line to the British throne and the first female in line to succeed her great grandmother, was formally introduced today after an audience with the Queen.
At around 3pm, Kensington Palace released the following statement:
"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
"The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge."
It is believed Kate and William
kept the name under wraps until they were able to inform Queen Elizabeth of their choice in person. The couple, together with their newborn and Prince George, who turns two in July, have decamped to Anmer Hall, their country mansion on the Sandringham Estate, where the monarch and Prince Phillip were due to see their youngest grandchild today.

Charlotte and Alice were the bookies' favourites, with Olivia making a late appearance after the princess was born on Saturday morning.
While the world was asked to wait a few days before the princess' name was announced, at least the delay wasn't as long as it was when Prince William was born; Princess Diana and Prince Charles waited a week before announcing William's name.
When Prince Charles was born in 1948, the Queen waited an entire
month before revealing his name.
