A major police operation was launched in response to reports of shootings at the Olympia Einkaufszentrum in the district of Moosach as the city of Munich went into complete lockdown last night. The initial report was that police were looking for three gunmen in a suspected terrorist attack and warned people to stay indoors and avoid public places, while encouraging onlookers not to share any photos or video of police operations which could potentially help the perpetrators.
Unconfirmed reports say that one of the gunmen was said to have shouted "I am German", whilst insulting foreigners.
More than 100,000 people watched this Live Periscope broadcast from the scene which showed dozens of armed police surrounding the building.
Munich police chief Hubertus Andrae spoke at a press conference this morning, and says the attack, "makes us speechless and our thoughts go out in particular to the victims."
"As a result of the manhunt with a large-scale operation force, we have found a male person, who given the current level of intelligence committed suicide," Mr Andrae said.
This attack comes only eight days after more than 80 lives were lost in Nice, and only four days after another killing spree by another teenage asylum-seeker in Germany on Monday, who launched an axe and knife attack on train passengers train, injuring five people in Wuerzburg, southern Germany. The axeman was shot dead by police, and Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
