Parents love an unusual name these days. When I was naming son I researched choices according to when they were last popular and used that as a guide – the name I chose had seen its last peak of popularity in the mid 1800s. Perfect for my little Floyd.
This may seem a touch over the top but as a Sophie (a name that has been at the top of the name charts for the last five years) I find my super common name a bit annoying. I am constantly hearing myself berated by other mothers in the park.
“SOPHIE! Put that down.” “SOPHIE! Stop touching that little boy.” It’s very disconcerting.
This is a list compiled by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) of names that were hugely popular in Ireland in the mid 60s but have since declined. They have studied the records and have made comparisons based on how many children born in 2014 were given the name.
