Picking a name can be tough.

Some parents prefer to go the more traditional route, while others want their future child to have a moniker unique enough that they’re not sharing a name with half of the class.

But sometimes, parents-to-be go above and beyond trying to come up with a creative moniker for their little one.

The New Zealand Herald report that 66 names were ‘rejected’ in 2018, with suggested monikers ranging from royal titles to military ranks. There were even some roman numerals.

King and Royal were the most rejected names of the year at six each, while four babies were (almost) named Prince. Royalty and Saint rounded out the top five most-rejected names, at three babies each.

The most unusual of the moniker choices, though, were probably the roman numerals II and III – there’s no denying they are unique, anyways.

Jeff Montgomery, the registrar-general of births, death and marriages, explained that there were some boundaries that were put into place as to what names could be used.

The suggested monikers couldn’t cause offence, had to be of reasonable length (aka: no more than 70 characters) and did not unjustifiably resemble an official title or rank.

He said:

“The name of any baby born and registered in New Zealand must comply with New Zealand’s rules – regardless of the nationality of the parents.

“For example, you’ll need to rethink swear words, names of more than 70 characters, numerals or anything unpronounceable – like a backslash or a punctuation mark.

“There’s no problem if you want to give your child a spelled-out number or even a silly name, but remember your child has to live with it.”
