Beautifully plain Irish baby names we are bringing back onto the radar

Amanda Cassidy

We have seen the revival of old man names like Alfie and Stan. We welcomed the comeback of sweet old lady monikers like Nancy and Ethel.

But what about good solid 80’s names like Deirdre, Tracey, Seamus, and J.P? And why have they fallen entirely off our collective baby-names radar?

We are casting aside names inspired by comets, Greek gods, characters from an English novel or nouveau Gaelic revival in favour of names you would hear ‘down the golf-club.’

We applaud the Jennys, the Muireanns, the Pamelas and the Nigels of this world and feel it is now time we honoured their memory by passing them onto the next generation.

Just because these names are more likely to be seen in your secondary school yearbook rather than a baby name book doesn’t mean they are not cool.

Help us bring back the 80’s love with our list of potential baby that are so ordinary they deserve to be extraordinary:

1.Pamela

Pamela was your best friend in Junior Infants – she had warts, but she also had a rollerskating birthday party in Top Hat, so you didn’t mind sharing your fancy paper.

2.Tracey

Remember back in the olden days when it snowed way more. Tracey was the type of child who loved the snow (and ketchup sandwiches.)

3. Dymphna

The Dymphnas of this world love their ‘woollies’ and will only ever give books as Christmas presents.

4. Derek

It has been scientifically proven that all Dereks love hats. They also love golf, but mostly because they get to wear hats.

Relax

5. Barry

A born messer. The Barrys of the world still wear cords and are most likely to be found singing ‘Ole Ole Ole’ after two pints.

6. Geraldine

Geraldine is a solid type. She works for the council and always talks about that time she appeared on Blackboard jungle. She also loves Chilly Willies. (The ice-cream)

Exploring the world

7. Trish

Trish’s most prized possession was her Henry Hippo wallet. She was also your fourth best friend when you played Red-Rover in the yard. (Until it was banned)

8. Seamus

Seamus was the type of kid that was the BEST at kerbs and who idolised Super Ted. He now works for the revenue.

9. Pauline

We want this name to be the new Emily. It is so pretty and feminine. Paulines would make amazing ballerinas. Do it.

Small ballerina

10. Brendan

Brendan has a rake of brothers. They are from the West of Ireland, and he is now most likely to be a Guard or a builder, or probably both.
