Mother considers changing her daughter’s name before school as it’s “too common”

“Totally hacked off and really upset by this.”

Parents are armed with a list the length of their arms when the back-to-school season rolls around. Uniforms, new shoes, books, lunch recipes, school fees, hair cuts, and more.

The one thing parents don’t usually have to worry about is their child’s name, but one mum is thinking of making one major change before school starts again.

She confessed to Mumsnet that she is considering changing her daughter’s name because it is “too common”.

She explained, “I gave her a name which, I thought, was very original as I hadn’t heard another girl called it in about 20 years. Only to find when she started nursery another girl called the same but spelled differently. DD [darling daughter] is due to start full-time education in September and there will be two other girls with the same name so three in the class including DD.”

The mother named her little girl Esmée but is now thinking of changing her daughter’s name.

“Totally hacked off and really upset by this. Maybe an overreaction but in the 1970s I was one of five named the same in my class and vowed never to have my DC [dear child]’s live with the same. Now history is being repeated,” she shared.

“AIBU [am I being unreasonable] to change my DD’s name before September? I love her name but HATE it’s so common now.”

Mums told her she should let her daughter make the decision.

“I don’t think it’s up to you, surely it’s up to your daughter, it’s her name now, not yours! She might not care that she shares her name in the same way that you did.”

Others said there’s no harm in having the same name as other children.

“How on earth would you explain that to her,” another said.

The mum explained that she went through a similar experience when she was younger. She said: “I’ve lived through this. I can remember my whole junior/secondary school time being coloured by the fact that so many of us had the same name. I changed it as soon as I could because of that reason. Every time I hear my real name I shudder.”

Do you think the mum should change her daughter’s name or is her little girl too old now?
