Mum asks for ‘hipster’ baby girl names and people have a LOT to say

Cathy Donohue

Okay then.

There’s no denying that choosing a name for your newborn baby is a tough decision and deciding on the perfect moniker can take a while.

You might buy a couple of baby books or check out online forums for advice but at the end of the day, the decision is all yours.

Mumsnet is a popular site for all things parenting-related and a recent thread featured one user asking what baby girls names are considered ‘hipster’.

The word hipster is often used in relation to describe something as being cool, edgy or different and so it’s possible that this person was looking for unique baby name suggestions.

People were very forthcoming with their suggestions and you can see some of the ideas below.

One user said:

“Juno, Indigo, Enid, Agnes, Mabel, Martha, Wren, Luna. All beautiful names right enough”.

Someone else commented:

“Isla’s very mainstream. Clementine and Florence are, to my mind, more upper middle class than hipster.

“Agree with ahead-of-the-curve granny chic (Sybil, Edith, Jean) and Nordic- or Scandi-sounding (Marit, Nora).

“I think hipsters would be more likely to call a boy Indigo than a girl”.

Other suggestions included Dixie, Albertine, Mabel and Stella and by the end of the thread, most people were of the opinion that choosing a ‘hipster’ baby name is done so in the hope of setting a trend.

If you’re intrigued to learn more about the baby names generated by this thread you can check it out in full here.
