Mum furious after mum-in-law claims she’s set daughter up for ‘lifetime of being bullied’ over name

Picking a name for your little one is tough.

You want to pick something that is unique – but also one that they won’t have ridiculed over (or that they’re going to end up spelling out for the rest of their lives). .

But you also don’t want it to be so popular that they are sharing a name with half of their class once school time rolls around.

And that’s all before factoring in the stress of additional input from friends, family and the in-laws.

A mum has said that she was left in “floods of tears” over her mother-in-law’s cruel comments about her daughter’s name

She explained on Mumsnet [via Kidspot] that she and her husband had some difficulties coming up with a name for their little one throughout her pregnancy.

They decided to wait until the baby was born before settling on a name – and now their daughter is five days old.

She said:

“My husband had recently had a conversation with my mum who mentioned that my nan’s middle name was Mina.

“He liked it and when he looked it up saw it was shortened version also of Wilhelmina.”

Her husband also fell in love with the name – and she said that they both love the fact that it can be shortened to “Mina, Wilma and Minnie.”

So, in the end, they settled on the name Wilhelmina Maureen – with their daughters middle name coming from her dad’s side of the family.

The new mum said that she had been “dreading” announcing the name, as she suspected her mother in law wouldn’t like it.

“However, what I didn’t expect was the reaction we got,” she added.

The woman recalled that they have been hit by “a barrage of quite nasty messages” since announcing their daughter’s moniker.

Her mother-in-law asked the couple what was wrong with them, as they had clearly done it to “wind her up”.

The baby’s grandmother said that everyone would cal the girl Willy or Meanie Mina, adding that since the name has ‘hel’ in it, they have set the little girl up for a “lifetime of being bullied”.

The mum-of-two said that her husband’s mum’s comments have left her in “floods of tears” – and wondering if she was unreasonable for her reaction.

The commenters were quick to reassure her that it was her mother-in-law who was being unreasonable, not her – and offered some brilliant advice on what to do.

“Your DH [darling husband] needs to nip it in the bud now and tell her she will not be getting within 100 yards of her DGD [darling granddaughter] if she says one more thing about the name. She also needs to apologise if she wants to see any of you any time soon. Vile!”
