Mum-to-be sparks fury for wanting to choose the same baby name as her sister

What do you reckon, mamas?

What do you reckon, mamas?

Settling on a moniker for your little one is tough enough.

You want it to be timeless and classic – and yet unique enough that they won’t be sharing it with half of their class when the time comes.

Never mind their own cousins.

One mum has come under fire after asking if it would be OK to pick the same baby name that her sister had used for her son.

She explained that her sibling had picked the name Benjamin, but her son is known as Benji.

And the original poster admitted that “there is literally not one other name” that she likes for boys, so she is thinking of using the same name.

She recalled how she and her partner had picked the name “12 years ago” – but hadn’t told anyone about it.

Her sister then welcomed her own child two years ago.

She added:

“Benjamin was going to be our name for a boy.

“My sister didn’t know this and I didn’t tell her this after she had him either but I did mention it to my mum when she told me he’d been born and the chosen name.

“I am now pregnant and it’s a boy and there is literally not one other name I can find that I like for boys, never mind one that my DH [darling husband] would also like. DH has one other name he likes but I don’t like it.

“It’s quite unusual and I tend to prefer old-fashioned, traditional names. I have read websites full of lists of names and still there is nothing I can find.”

The general consensus was that while nobody actually owns a name, she definitely, 100 per cent should not pick Benjamin.

One person wrote:

“Sorry but I think you should find a different name. They’ll be in the same family, similar ages, it’s just unnecessarily confusing.”

Another person added:

“I really wouldn’t. It’ll be confusing and it will seem like copying even if you thought of it first. You will find another name you both like, there are many.”
