Mum-to-be stunned after finding out heartbreaking history behind baby name choice

Keeley Ryan

Settling on a name for your little one can be quite tough.

So, one mum-to-be was over the moon when she thought that she and her boyfriend had managed to find the right moniker for their baby girl.

However, things took a turn when she decided to share their chosen name with her mum – who begged her to pick another one because of a heartbreaking history with the name.

Taking to Reddit’s Am I The Asshole? forum, the mum-to-be explained:

“Last night when I was talking to my mom she asked me if we had thought of any names. I tell her that I have always wanted to name my daughter Catalina as I think the name is beautiful.

“My mom is very serious and insists that we can not name her that and to please think of something new.

“I said no I love that name and so does bf. My mom breaks down and tells me the story.”

The woman recalled how her mum told her that the year she was born, her father had an affair with a woman named Catalina. It lasted for around three months, almost ending their marriage.

The mum-to-be confessed she was feeling “conflicted” after talking to her mum.

She continued:

“I love that name and I don’t want to resign… But I would inflicting emotional damage on my mom.”

She added that her boyfriend has said to her that her mum needs to get over it, while other family members have encouraged the mum-to-be to think about how it would affect her mum.

“I am leaning towards naming my daughter Catalina,” she admitted.

Hundreds of people took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the dilemma.

One person pointed out:

“What’s going to happen after your daughter finds out that she’s named after the same woman who her grandfather had an affair with?

“It’s just ugly, move on from it.”

Someone else urged her to “avoid the name” as it would mean “things will be fine for everyone.”

After reading through the comments, the mum-to-be said that she and her boyfriend decided they wouldn’t be using the name as a first name.
