There’s a very clear trend emerging.

Year on year, the most popular baby names chosen by parents remains fairly similar.

Yes, there are a handful of picks that continue to reappear in the list every year, however, the popularity of one name has massively fallen this year.

BabyCentre today revealed some statistics they’d gathered around baby name choices in the first half of 2018 and found that one name, in particular, has nearly dropped off the list of top 100 names.

The findings show that the name Harvey has fallen in popularity by over 30 percent and that’s likely down to the #MeToo movement and allegations against Harvey Weinstein.

Allegations against the disgraced media mogul have continued to come out over the last year and in May, Weinstein was arrested and charged.

Experts think this has now had an impact on the number of parents choosing to pick the name Harvey for their newborns.

BabyCentre is now predicting that the name could become the least popular name of the year, and fall off the list of top 100 names totally.

This comes as the names of some of the most vocal members of the #MeToo movement see their names soaring up the list.

Names such as Alyssa, Rose, Ashley and Gwyneth have seen a huge rise in popularity in recent months.

“The #MeToo movement has been one of the biggest news stories of 2018, so it’s no surprise that its influence has reached as far as the names BabyCentre parents are choosing for their newborns,” says associate editor, Lorna Marsh.

“Harvey has fallen 24 places to number 83. We’ll have to wait for the end of the year top 100 to see if it falls out of the chart altogether.

“Meanwhile we could witness names of some of the women behind the movement break into the coveted top spots.”
