It’s crazy how popular these boys and girls baby names are in America

Laura Grainger

Even an Irish name topped the list for the boys.

Baby names in the United States are usually subject to getting the meme treatment for their… eh, uniqueness.

But the most popular baby names across the USA from 2020 are actually fairly ordinary, common names you’d find elsewhere in the West.

The US Social Security Administration released its list of most popular baby names of 2020, also sharing a state-by-state breakdown that showed the top names in each of the 50 states.

The name Olivia is apparently crazily popular amongst American pandemic babies, with the name topping the list of girl names in 29 states plus Washington, D.C.

Liam was the number one name in the country for boys, topping the list in 22 states and again in Washington, D.C.

While Emma was only top of the list in two states (Florida and Pennsylvania), enough baby girls in those states were given the name to make it the second most popular girl name in the country.

Similarly, the number two name in the country for boys – Noah – only took top spot in five states, but this included the state of California, which has a population of nearly 40 million people.

Ava was a regional favourite in the South, taking the lead in the five states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. This bumped the name up to third most popular on the nationwide girls’ list.

Oliver was the third most popular boys’ name overall, but it topped the list in 17 states.

A graphic by Huffpost shows how crazy popular the names are when you judge them by a map:

It doesn’t take a psychic to predict future America as having a whole load of couples called Olivia and Oliver.
