Someone apparently tried to name their baby ‘/’ and ‘.’ last year

That's one way to stand out.

They’re definitely unique.

/, Saint, Prince and . are among the names that got rejected by the government in New Zealand last year.

Around 30 names registered by parents over the last 12 months were found to be unsuitable.

According to the New Zealand Herald, Internal Affairs released the list of declined names on January 9.

Parents attempted to register the names on the government’s website SmartStart before the monikers were judged to be unsuitable.

Prince was the most rejected name of the year, with parents attempting to register it four times.

Meanwhile, Royalty and Royal came in second with three tries each.

Saint, the name of Kim and Kanye’s little boy, made the list of rejected names due to some very different legislation when it comes to baby names.

In New Zealand, a baby’s name shouldn’t be offensive, be unreasonably long, or sound like or include an official title.

If the names aren’t able to meet the criteria, they are reviewed by the Registrar-General and the family have a shot to present their reasons for the name.

Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages Jeff Montgomery told the publication:

“Less than 1 per cent of babies have their proposed name considered, but the name of any baby born and registered in New Zealand must comply with New Zealand’s rules, regardless of the nationality of the parents.”
