After a long reign, Sophia, Emily and Ava have been knocked off the top position to be replaced with (surprise, surprise) Charlotte.
Meanwhile on the boys side of things after a long spell in baby-name-siberia Atticus is topping the polls as the most popular boy’s name of 2015 so far. Atticus has made quite a leap in popularity swooping up from 370th position on Nameberry‘s ranking in 2014.
It’s no coincidence that this resurge in popularity coincides with the landmark publishing event of the decade, author of To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee’s second novel. Though parents who named their bubs prior to actually reading the book may be feeling a little cheated as the small-town lawyer, Atticus – once the very emblem of fairness and justice in TKAMB – has become a racist in the new book.
Still, it’s a lovely name and fans of TKAMB will most likely unanimously agree to forget Atticus’ later incarnation. The name is Latin in origin and means “man of Attica”.
