Some things come full circle.

There are certain baby names that will forever be associated with a particular period of time – we don’t think there were any babies called Britney in Ireland before the late nineties – but others are more enduring.

There are a few from the turn of the 20th century that are now making a comeback over 100 years later.

The Huffington Post has compared the top baby names in Britain from 1904 with some from the present day and found that some names we tend to think of as old-fashioned are coming back into vogue with UK mums and dads.

Florence, the second-biggest girl baby name that year, is now the 19th most popular baby name in the UK.

Eighth most popular girls’ name from 1904 Alice is also still holding strong at number 17 on the list.

Other big girls’ names that year that are still in the top 100 names today include Elsie, Ivy, Violet, Lily and Emily.

For boys, many more of the top names in 1904 are still popular. The most popular name then, William, is tenth most popular today.

The third favourite name for boys, George, is still in third place today.

Other popular boys’ names that are still in the top 100 now include Thomas, James, Arthur, Charles, Frederick, Joseph and Harry.

Meanwhile, there are some names that don’t look likely to be resurrected any time soon.

Among the top girls’ names in 1904 were Doris (third most popular that year) and Gladys (the 11th biggest). Those names now rank at 2,547th and 4,763rd for girls born, so it’s unlikely there’d be more than one in a class at school.

Also popular back then were Ethel and Hilda. They were at numbers 13 and 14 on the list but now rank at 1,834 and 3,609.

For boys, Harold was the 14th most popular name in 1904 but has slipped back to 1,123rd place while Leslie, then at 24 on the list is now ranked at 4,023.
