The ’90s heartthrob bob is the latest nostalgic trend set to dominate summer

Katy Brennan

Our ’90s obsession is going nowhere.

When it comes to beauty trends, this year is all about looking to the past for inspiration.

We’ve had fluffy hair, thin eyebrows, frosted eye shadow… the list goes on. But the latest nostalgic trend to resurface is the heartthrob bob – and we can’t believe we’ve slept on it for so long.

The choppy, layered look is synonymous with the 1990s, and at the time it was totally gender fluid, too.

It was rocked by the likes of Cameron Diaz in There’s Something About Mary, Leonardo di Caprio in Romeo and Juliet, and Gwyneth Paltrow in Sliding Doors. Even Brad Pitt, Keira Knightley and Matt Damon were sporting it for a while.

The hairdo sits a bit higher on the face than a standard bob cut, think of it as a mix between a longer blunt bob and a pixie cut.

It features tight cropped layers at the nape of the neck and longer, cheekbone-scraping layers at the front.

Hair stylist Mara Roszack told Vogue the look is one that can bring you back to your “adolescence in all the right ways”. She added that so many of her ’90s crushes and Hollywood heartthrobs had this cut at the time.

Of course, the 2022 version comes with a more modern finish. Instead of hard, rigid edges there’s a more a softness to it. And there’s a few more ways to do it too.

It’s best to keep the whole cut jaw-length but you can play around a bit by going for super straight and sleek or wavy with a middle part.

The best thing about the look is styling it takes little to no effort. You can pretty much wake up and exude those effortless grunge-chic vibes instantly.

While it looks undeniably good, we know chopping your hair can be quite the commitment, so if you’re tempted but hesitant check out the butterfly haircut, aka the best of both worlds, in the meantime.
