Anti-ageing with a twist: how we can all fight wrinkles with… booze!

Any excuse...

Gillian Fitzpatrick

We’re as intrigued as the next woman when it comes to weird and wonderful skin-care trends.

After all, there is only so much that makeup can do – and anything that makes us look less tired than we actually are is to be very much welcomed.

Which is why the latest beauty secret to reach us (courtesy of a Google consumer report) has REALLY caught our attention.

That’s because, apparently putting ALCOHOL (OK, so now we’re listening) on your skin can do it all sorts of good.

Not that we’re advising you slap a load of old anything on your face. Yes, the key to a gloriously glowing complexion is… sake.

The Japanese rice wine is current cropping up in a host of products – and for good reason too.

Firstly, it’s rich in enzymes – enzymes that gently exfoliate your skin by breaking down dead cells and impurities without stripping the surface of vital moisture.

Not only that, kojic acid (which is produced during the fermentation process) acts as an antioxidant that naturally lessens the likes of dark spots, sun-damage, freckles, and discoloration.

Furthermore, it can tackle blemishes due to its antimicrobial properties.

If anti-ageing is more your thing (*waves hand manically*), then sake does that too: the drink’s rice oil penetrates deep into the skin, smoothing it and discouraging new wrinkles from forming.

Brands which champion sake include Tatcha, Boscia, and Jozen-Mizunogotoshi Skin Care.
