6 clever back-to-school hacks every parent need for an easier life

It’s almost September, guys, and for most of us, that means that the new school year is now imminent, whether we like it or not.

I think what most of us mamas dread the most about this time a year is the change of pace from summer holidays, and that constant feeling of being rushed and a little unprepared.

There is a lot to be said for the idea of “starting as you mean to go on”, and so with that in mind, here are six little hacks I plan on implementing NOW in the hopes that this school year will run as smoothly as possible.

1. Follow the school’s Facebook page

Embrace social media, mums. This way, you won’t miss any reminder of upcoming events, and will stay on top of the back-to-school information going out.

2. Add the school’s numbers and e-mail into your phone

This will come in oh-so-handy when you have to call in about little Jack having to be picked up early as he has a doctor’s appointment. Also, by adding the e-mail address, you will make sure that any e-mails the school office send out don’t disappear into your spam folder.

3. Bulk-shop for lunch staples

Whether it is cheese strings, yogurts or granola bars, you will save yourself a lot of hassle if you bulk-buy these to last you for a month. Especially this first month, when you are all trying to get back into the swing of things again.

4. Don’t make any plans for the first week (maybe even month) of school

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking your kids need entertaining all hours of every day – especially these first few weeks, that tend to be stressful enough as they are. Instead, let afternoons be decompression time—and make room for plenty of snuggling and talking about their day. At least until everyone has gotten used to the new routine.

5. Decide on how involved with school you want (or have the time to) be

Before all the asking and e-mails start, take a look at your own calendar and decide if this is really the best year to offer to be the class rep or the PTA contact person.

6. Get into a good bedtime routine

When it comes to kids, the importance of enough rest and sleep cannot be underestimated. And while it can be tempting to let the kids stay up a little later because you haven’t seen them all day, remember that the most crucial part of getting the school year off to a good start, is making sure that everyone gets all the rest they need at night.
