A new documentary following the stories of the controversial Peru Two is now available to watch on BBC 3.

Michaella McCollum and Melissa Reid were apprehended in August 2013 after attempting to smuggle over a million euros worth of cocaine out of Peru.

McCollum and Reid initially claimed they had been coerced by an armed gang but subsequently pleaded guilty to smuggling drugs.

On 17 December 2013, the pair were sentenced to six years and eight months imprisonment but were released three years early after appealing their cases.

The new five part BBC series High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule will mainly focus on McCollum’s experience in Ancon 2, which is one of Peru’s most brutal prisons.

The docu-series will take a look at McCollum’s life behind bars as well as where she has ended up since being released from prison in 2016.

“Told in her own words, McCollum recounts the extraordinary story of how she became infamous worldwide as one half of the Peru Two.

From how she was recruited as a cartel drugs mule and came to be arrested, tried and jailed in one of the most notorious maximum security prisons in Peru, to the even more extraordinary story of how she got herself out again.”

Before arriving in Peru McCollum had been working in a nightclub in Ibiza, but travelled to Peru on August 15 before attempting to leave again just two days later with 11kg of cocaine.

Michaella McCollum has  since written a book about her experiences entitled You’ll Never See Daylight Again.

High: Confessions of an Ibiza Drug Mule is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
