Why Love Island’s Danny is the boy we all pray our daughters never meet

Laura Cunningham

Seriously, get him out of there now.

There are many reasons I wouldn’t allow my hypothetical older children to watch Love Island. Yes it’s just a bit of fun, that’s certainly why I watch it anyway, but it also contains some of the finest examples of unhealthy relationship behavior we’re likely to see.

The latest drama surrounds new boy Danny, who might as well have entered the villa wearing a red flag as a toga.

He’s bad vibes personified and I’m NOT into it.

Seeing Lucinda having trouble deciding between a “nice boyfriend” (Aaran) and a “bad boyfriend” (Danny) makes me dread the day my son starts dating in case he comes across a potential partner who behaves anything like this.

This lad is every parent’s worst nightmare. Because he has tattoos? Nope, we love a sleeve. The shaved head? Absolutely not — major baldy fan here.

Where do I even start with the real reasons he really might be “bad boyfriend” material? Twitter knows what’s up…

Possessiveness

Seemingly forgetting that Lucinda was very much in a situation with Aaran when he entered the villa, Danny immediately became possessive of Lucinda as soon as he chose her to couple up with. No real feelings had any time to form yet, instantly, nobody else was allowed to speak to her.

RUN, LUCINDA.

Anger

And how did he deal with these feelings? Did he cry? Did he open up about his feelings to his new confidant, Snakey Jake? Na, he SEETHED and stared Aaran down in a menacing way.

Honestly, get him out of there.

Manipulation

At least, he tried to manipulate her. His attempts to convince Lucinda she had something to worry about by kissing AJ in a challenge was another huge red flag. It’s also a telling sign that it’s not real affection he’s after from her and that he couldn’t care less how she feels — he just wants to win her.

Gaslighting

When the realisation kicked in that all his dickheadery hadn’t worked, he went about convincing Lucinda that there was something wrong with her, describing her as a “matt black Lamborghini that won’t start”. The second he realised she was pulling away, he ‘ended’ it so he could save face.

Your face is not saved, Danny boy. It’s far from it.

His next victim

The fact that he chose AJ to move on to is very telling. She’s a vulnerable character in the villa, having not quite clicked with anyone yet despite her greatest attempts. He knew she’d be receptive and, let’s face it, he’s now using her to both stroke his own ego and to make it clear to everyone that he’s not a loser in love.

I will make it my life’s work to ensure my son doesn’t behave like this, or date someone who does.
