5 tips to make your family holiday stress-free this year

It's that time of year again.

Keeley Ryan

It’s that time of year again.

Family holidays are a great way for the whole clan to relax, unwind, and just enjoy each other’s company – especially when everyone is so busy these days.

And now that summer is officially here (or, at least, that’s how it feels with this weather), we’re already planning our next break away.

And there’s a lot to consider already.

Packing bags, check-ins, sunburn disasters, crowded beaches and desperately trying to feed a picky brood away from home can actually make you want to tear your hair out.

Whether you’re travelling abroad or tearing around the country we have some tips to help you relax and enjoy your holiday like you deserve.

Organisation is key

To make sure that you don’t have the ‘Oh god, what did we forget?!’ fear after arriving at your destination, make sure to grab a little notebook for lists.

Lists of chores you need to do before heading away, things you want to bring with you, things you think the family would like to do or see, as well as travel information.

And, of course, make sure to research the nearby restaurants and bars, jotting down the information of any you think look nice.

This will end up saving you loads of time in the long run, as you won’t be aimlessly be looking for somewhere to eat – and, in general, will just make you feel more prepared.

Also make sure to get all your travel documents in order, double (and triple) checking that you have everyone’s boarding passes and passports in a safe spot to avoid a last minute panic.

Make sure you don’t forget the entertainment factor

If you are traveling long-haul, make sure you have plenty of things to keep your children occupied.

Colouring books, jigsaw puzzles, aqua doodles and books – the possibilities are endless when it comes to keeping your little one entertained.

And that’s not including possible screen time.

While it may not be the most ideal option, a tablet can be an absolute lifesaver when you’re in the middle of a lengthy road trip – or worse, a long flight.

Make sure you have it full charged and jam-packed with offline apps and movies before you head off – and don’t forget the headphones.

You don’t have to cave too early (after all, you don’t want to overuse screen time), but it is a definite plus to have the tech to make the trip easier.

Book any big days out well in advance

Planning on hitting up the theme park or water parks on your vacation? Make sure to book your tickets well ahead of time.

There are plenty of bonuses to booking ahead.

It will definitely save any possibly disappointment or tears if you get to your destination, only to find out your chosen day is all booked out.

And some places may have discounted family tickets if you book in advance, or even possibly a sale – a win-win, really.

Make sure to protect your little ones from those UV rays

Nobody wants to be sunburnt on holidays – so make sure to keep the SPF nearby at all times.

Make sure to always use a high factor sunscreen on kids and, if your children are particularly fair, it is advisable that they keep a light t-shirt on at all times if they are on the beach.

And don’t forget about protecting feet with suncream – while it may be one of the easiest parts of the body to forget about while applying suncream, it is so uncomfortable to burn.

Babies under 6 months should always be kept in the shade so it is advisable to bring an umbrella or a buggy with a hood – as well as a sun hat to protect their skin.

Consider booking a home away from home

Instead of getting a hotel room for your family holiday, look at booking a small apartment or Airbnb.

Having your own washing machine will make packing easier (since you won’t have to bring as much), and having a kitchen will make sure that you won’t be dining out every night – especially since that can add up incredibly quickly.
