Making memories: 10 fun things I plan to do with my kids this autumn
Let the (family) fun begin.
Schools are back, the world is opening up again, and my goodness, I am here for it. I think we all are.
Last autumn, things were very different looking – Halloween was cancelled, travel seemed like a distant dream and, well, it was a scary and unsettling time.
This year, life feels almost normal again. And this autumn, it feels like a fresh start. A new chapter. And I, for one, intend on embracing the new season for all it's worth. Because while sure, there might still be a few things that still look a little different over the coming weeks and even months, there are still so many wonderful ways we can celebrate the season with our kids.
And the best thing? They'll always remember this – because often, it's the little things and time spent together that leaves us with the best and most treasured memories.
Here are 10 ways to really embrace autumn with your kids this year:
1. Go conkers picking
My kids love looking for conkers and collect them every autumn. We have a special tree that we visit each year, and the ground below it us usually covered in conkers – much to our delight. And so we pick and squash them out of their shells (if the shell is still on) and collect.
Mind you – we don't really do much with this collection, so usually, come October time, we tend to bring all the conkers back to the park and leave them somewhere for the squirrels!
2. Get them involved in making soup from scratch
Children love to get in the kitchen with their parents, and what better way than to teach them about preparing food than to introduce them to something as soul-warming as soups?
Also – let them experiment with tastes and flavours. They will love it.
3. Jump through puddles
There is just something so pure and wonderful about jumping through puddles after the rain. So grab your wellies and head to the park – they will always remember that day mummy jumped in puddles with them!
4. Try bobbing for apples
Why wait until Halloween? Set up some bowls of water and get the kids apple bobbing?
And afterwards, just chop up the apples and do some apple printing. Pinterest is full of ideas!
5. Visit your local farmer's market
Autumn is a time for bounty, and bring the kids to your local market and have them help you pick out items on your shopping list – they will think it's cool they are allowed to help.
6. Pick autumn leaves and make art
Autumn leaves are glowing with beauty, and practically begging to be used for arts and crafts.
7. Decorate your home for autumn
Come September 1st, I am ready for autumn – regardless of how hot the weather outside is. Now is the time to embrace all the burlap and plaid. The mini pumpkins. The candles. The cosy throws – honestly – bring it on!
8. Make a hot chocolate bar
Set out some yummy toppings, fancy paper straws and some nice cups, and heat up a big pot of hot chocolate. Now you are ready to get cosy together.
9. Host a family movie night
Kids love when we sit down and watch movies with them, so why not make it an occasion. Søstrene Grene has the cutest little cardboard popcorn holders, and plenty of other party ideas too. Pick a good one, and away you go.
10. Bake an apple pie together
Next time you are at the market or in the supermarket, big up a bag of Irish apples. Or better yet – visit an apple orchard and pick your own!
Then set to work turning them into a pie. And invite the family over for a pie party!
