Three clever ways to keep your little ones in a routine over Christmas

Keep life (and your sanity) on track.

Any house with small children is chaotic at the best of times but the madness always hits a new level over the festive period.

Presents, visitors, travel and lots of sugar can mean little ones are hyper and a little out of control at Christmas.

Everyone wants the kids to have a ball but keeping them in a routine will make life a lot easier for everyone.

Here are our top three tips for keeping life on track and your sanity intact over the next week.

Three clever ways to keep your little ones in a routine over Christmas

1.Food and sleep are key

Keeping on top of sleep schedules and healthy eating is easier said than done at Christmas, obviously, but you’ll reap the benefits if you make an effort.

Make sure they’re getting decent meals and that they’re not left run amok with sweets later in the day as this could disturb bedtime.

Try to ensure that kids go to bed and eat at the same time as they always would, even if you’re staying away from home.

2. Stick to the rules

Whatever is expected of your kids during the year should apply over silly season too.

If they have chores to do or a rewards chart to follow, keep it up. If they’re cheeky or rude, don’t let it slide.

Ask anyone new who might be helping with childcare over the Christmas, like a visiting relative, not to tolerate bold behaviour.

3. Bring a bit of home on the road

Travel is one of the biggest reasons for kids getting out of sorts and falling out of routine. You can help create a sense of normality when you head away by taking things like blankets and toys from home with you.

Remember that small children do better in the morning so if possible, plan flights or long drives for earlier in the day.
