Channing Tatum reveals the ‘cruel’ way he proposed to his wife

Oh dear.

Channing Tatum’s plans to marry his now-wife Jenna Dewan Tatum almost came crashing down – all thanks to a “cruel” trick he pulled.

The couple first met when they co-starred in 2005’s Step Up – and their on screen romance soon became an off screen one.

And while they romance has seemed like something out of a fairytale book ever since, it turns out the events leading up to their engagement weren’t quite so romantic.

The Magic Mike actor confessed he pretended he “never wanted to get married” to throw her off his plan to propose.

But his plan quickly went horribly wrong – and Jenna “basically broke down crying”.

He told BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw:

“When I proposed to my wife I did something pretty cruel because I thought she was on to me. I basically told her I never wanted to get married to try to throw her off.

“I told her, ‘I don’t believe in the institution of marriage and I don’t think I ever want to get married.’

“She basically broke down crying.”

After realising just how wrong his plan had gone, he tried to fix the situation as quickly as he could.

He added:

“‘I thought, ‘This is not going well at all,’ so I had to propose to her sooner rather than later.”

Thankfully, it all worked out in the end for the couple, who have now been married for eight years.

The duo met while filming 2005’s Step Up, and Channing popped the question three years in Maui.

They tied the knot in July 2009 in Malibu, before welcoming daughter Everly in May 2013.
