Do you feel bad about putting your children in childcare?

Olivia Hayes

Would you feel bad in this mother’s situation?

If you could take a day out for yourself to do bits and bobs around the house, do a food shop or generally just relax, would you?

This mum says the she feels bad as she’s going to a four day week in work but wants to keep the kids in childcare on the fifth day.

She wrote:

“I’m in the process of negotiating a four day week from January.

“Nursery offer a discount for full time places which means the price difference is negligible. As such I am considering keeping them in full time nursery and just make it a.shorter day for them. I just feel a bit bad!”

Many told her to not feel bad about it, that she should take the day for herself.

One said:

“No don’t feel guilty. Make it a shorter day for them and get all your errands or laundry or whatever out of the way on that day in peace so that way you get to enjoy your days off together more.”

While another wrote:

“How old are they? Could you use the time to do housework/shopping etc then collect them early? So it sort of benefits them too, as you’ll have more free time when you’re with them?

“It doesn’t hurt to have a little time to yourself either. Most people don’t manage to get this when the kids are very little, and they could really do with it. I’m slightly jealous tbh!”

Would you do the same? Or feel bad about it? Does mum guilt set in or should it not matter?
