Here’s why Meghan and Harry’s newborn baby boy might not be a prince

Jade Hayden

There’s been a tad bit of confusion today as to whether Meghan and Harry’s newborn baby boy is a prince or not.

Basic logic would suggest that yes, he is a prince just as his father and his grandfather were before him.

However, the British royal family like to make things as complicated as possible which naturally means that not-yet-named baby Sussex may not be a prince at all.

Unless the Queen steps in and just lets him have a title. Which she more than likely will.

Still though, before then, Prince Sussex he is not. He’s just a regular old baby who happens to be quite privileged.

Here’s why.

In 1917, the use of titles like prince and princess were limited to either the children of the sovereign, the children of the son of the sovereign, and the oldest son of the oldest son of the sovereign.

Confused? Same, but essentially what that meant was that you couldn’t technically call yourself a prince or a princess unless you were the oldest child who had a direct link to the sovereign (ie, the Queen), or a child or grandchild of the Queen.

So, if this idea had been adhered to, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte wouldn’t have been called so at all and only Prince George, the firstborn of Prince William, would have laid claim to the title.

Prince George

The Queen decided to step in though and give Charlotte a bit of lineage which was nice enough considering she’s the head of the royal family – not exactly known for being sound out, are they?

The assumption here is that the Queen will do the same for Meghan and Harry’s baby, allowing him to become a prince like the rest of his cousins.

Until then though, he’s just a royal baby.

Shame.

Harry and Meghan announced the birth of their first child today. The baby boy was born in the early hours of this morning weighing 7lbs, 3oz.

“It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined,” said Harry.

“How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. But we’re both absolutely thrilled.

“We’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there, it’s been amazing, so we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

The first photos of the newborn baby are expected to arrive on Wednesday.
