“Hugely proud.”

Mary Kennedy has lent her support to nephew Dermot Kennedy, saying that the entire family are very proud of him.

The former Nationwide presenter said that her own daughter, Lucy, and the ‘Outnumbered’ singer have been extremely close since they were children.

Lucy is now Dermot’s official photographer.

Mary told Ray D’Arcy on last night’s RTÉ The Ray D’Arcy Show that the familial connection between the two has helped her daughter capture deeply candid and personal shots of Dermot, both on and off stage.

“Lucy is Dermot’s photographer and it really is lovely because there’s only six months between Dermot and Lucy,” she said. “Dermot will be 28 in December and Lucy has just gone 28.”

“When they were growing up they were really, really close buddies and they still are (…) When we’d be out for a walk on a Sunday, we’d all be plodding along and you’d say where’s Dermot and Lucy and you’d look behind and there they’d be yap, yap, yap.

“When it comes to photography, she gets very candid shots because of the trust and the bond, which is nice. The whole family are hugely proud of Dermot. He’s just amazing.”

He is, indeed, Mary.

This comes after Dermot played two intimate gigs for fans in Dublin’s city centre earlier this week.

Aloft’s Homecoming Tour gigs saw the ‘Power Over Me’ singer perform a series of songs in The Liberties’ Aloft hotel as well as The Academy.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better homecoming,” said Dermot later.

Next year, the singer will embark on a US tour playing over 30 dates across the country, before travelling to the UK and then to Australia in May.

His debut album, Without Fear, was released earlier this year.
