Mum tries to justify calling one of her children ‘less popular’ online… again

Jade Hayden

A mum has again justified her reason for saying that one of her children was less popular online.

Katie Bower has received much criticism this week for suggesting that her son, Weston, isn’t “liked” due to the number of likes his photos get on her Instagram page.

In a now deleted post for Weston’s sixth birthday, the mum-blogger wrote:

“Instagram never liked my Munchkin and it killed me inside.

“His photos never got as many likes. Never got comments. From a statistical point of view, he wasn’t as popular with everyone out there.

“Maybe part of that was the pictures just never hit the algorithm right.”

Bower was criticised for comparing her son to her other children in terms of social media engagement – and also for suggesting that Weston would be negatively affected by his lack of likes in the future.

Bower has since deleted the post in question and tried to justify what she meant insisting that Weston understood that “…his value is not in online approval” … as she was previously suggesting.

She recently took to Instagram again to defend herself further in the form of a now expired Story.

Buzzfeed News reports that Bower said that blogging was a “weird” job and that this has been a moment of “personal growth” for her.

“I had to learn that the likes do not reflect much to me,” she said. “That I had to choose that, because I work with brands that tell you the opposite. I read an article about how to grow your Instagram that tells you the opposite.”

“Kids know there’s likes on photos and it’s very human nature to compare. So for me, my personal growth journey is teaching my kids it doesn’t matter.”

Despite this, Bower said that she does still worry about Weston’s self esteem because of the likes situation.

Maybe she should simply stop posting pictures of her kids then.

Done.
