A new Bill is set to introduce an additional eight weeks of parental leave.

According to RTÉ, the news comes following the passing of a Social Democrat Bill in the Seanad on Wednesday.

The Parental Leave (Amendment) Bill will allow the introduction of an additional four weeks parental leave from September 2019.

An additional four weeks of parental leave would be introduced from September 2020.

It would also see the age of the child for which parental leave is available from 8-years-old to 12-years-old.

Minister of the State at the Department of Justice David Stanton presented a number of amendments to the Bill on Wednesday evening, where they were passed in the Senad.

It will now go back to the Dáil for final approval, before being presented to the President.
