The emotional footage comes from Garraway’s upcoming documentary Finding Derek.

Finding Derek, which airs tonight (March 23rd) on ITV, follows the Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway and her husband Derek Draper’s battle with Covid-19 over the past year.

In the clip, both Kate and Derek are in tears as they video call each other in the aftermath of Derek coming out of his coma.

Kate says: “He’s back. We’ve been waiting a long time to speak to you. I’m so proud of you. I’m so proud of you.”

Garraway has been very open about her husband Derek’s struggle with the virus, which he caught a year ago and suffered liver, kidney, and heart failure as a result. It is no exaggeration that Draper has been fighting for his life since catching the virus.

The 53-year-old presenter has also announced that she will be stepping down from Good Morning Britain in order to focus on caring for her husband as he comes out of hospital. The two have been married since 2005 and have two children.

She said: “If I have to give up work to care for him it’s best to do it now. If he needs 24-hour care, I’ll be the primary carer.

“I’ve a fear of the reality. We’ll have to fall in love again a bit.”

The documentary will also look at how the family are planning and preparing to live life once Derek returns home. Their North London home has been made wheelchair-friendly for him.

There will also be moving scenes in which Draper admits how much he struggled to cope with his suffering, and the whole ordeal left him thinking of death. In one FaceTime call, Derek tells his wife “there’s now way out. I’ve got to the point where I just think fuck it. Just fuck it.”

The documentary will air on 23 March on ITV at 9pm.
