5 tips and tricks that will make your food last longer
If, like me, you struggle to keep up with the short shelf life of fresh food (the guilt, such a waste), here are 5 ways to make those beautiful groceries stay fresher for longer...
1. Store onions in tights
Placing your onions in tights will help keep them edible for up to eight months. One Hundred Dollars a Month gives you the lowdown on hosiery-wearing onions.
2. Cover herbs with plastic
Store herbs correctly and they’ll go from a few days of shelf life to a few weeks. This video from Cook Smarts will show you exactly what to do.
3. Rinse berries in vinegar
This is a berry good way (sorry) of keeping berries fresher for longer. This video from Momables shows you how to soak, swish, rinse, dry and store for maximum freshness.
4. Store apples with potatoes
When stored together, apples keep potatoes from sprouting, which will help them to last much longer. Rubber Cowgirl explains why.
5. Butter your cheese
Apart from sounding tasty (in a really bad way), adding a dab of butter to the cut side of cheese will lock in the moisture and prevent it from drying out. Wrap the cheese in wax paper (not plastic) and then place in a plastic food bag. Keep in the warmest part of the fridge.
