This is just the type of news we like to hear coming into a bank holiday weekend.
There are few better ways to enjoy a day off than by chowing down on a cheat day feast of afternoon tea treats in a fancy spot and now Cork’s oldest hotel is offering one of the best deals we’ve come across.
The Metropole Hotel on historic MacCurtain Street is offering afternoon tea for two people for a bargain €25, all-in.
Think fresh scones with cream and jam, finger sandwiches and baked goodies, all washed down with a big old pot of tea or coffee; grab your besties and that’s a grade A day out right there.

The hotel itself dates from 1897, when it was built on a design by architect, Arthur Hill.
Edward VII enjoyed tea on the roof of The Metropole when he visited Cork in 1903 for the city’s Great Exhibition and the hotel has also hosted famous guests including Gregory Peck, Frank O’Connor, John Steinbeck, Vittoria de Sica, John Huston and Walt Disney.
Dawn Adams, the 1950’s British film star created the greatest stir when she stayed at The Metropole during the Cork Film Festival and requested her bath be filled with milk. Douglas Vance, the famous hotelier, refused her, reasoning that the people of Cork were finding it hard to makes ends meet. The story made headlines around the world at that time.
The moral of the story? When you book your visit, ask for a reasonable amount of milk with your tea and everything will be just dandy.
