Creative condiment: 10 other things to do with salt in the kitchen

Think outside the salt grinder

Salt is WAY more than just a trusty condiment we put on the table at mealtimes.

Here are 10 other ways you can put the versatile household mineral to use in your kitchen…

1. Brighten a wooden chopping board

Sprinkle salt over the cutting board and scour it using half a lemon. Rinse with water and let the board dry.

2. Peel eggs easier

Add a teaspoon of salt to the cooking water before putting in the eggs.

3. Keep laundry bright

Add a tablespoon of salt to the wash to help seal in the colour.

4. Make milk last longer

Add a pinch of salt to your milk carton to make it last a few days longer.

5. Remove watermarks from wood

Make a wet salt paste and gently rub it into the ring until it disappears.

6. Clean greasy pans

Sprinkle a generous amount of salt in the pan to soak up grease. Scrub the salt to remove any burned-on bits, then wash.

7. Test egg freshness
Put two teaspoons of salt in a cup of water and place an egg in it — a fresh egg will sink, an older egg will float.

8. Restore a sponge

To help hand and mop sponges revert back to a pristine state, soak them overnight in a solution of 1/4 cup salt per 1/4 litre of water.

9. Remove odours from hands
If you’ve been chopping onions or garlic, you can get rid of the smell on your fingers with a salt and vinegar combo.

10. Clean the bottom of your oven

If something has bubbled over while cooking in the oven, put a handful of salt on top of the spill. It will bake into a crust that makes the mess much easier to clean when it has cooled.
