Dietician Dr Mary McCreery shares her recipe suggestions for school lunches

With the end of the Easter Break soon, we’ll all back to packing those lunch boxes.

I always feel a little stuck when it comes to what to pack in my child’s lunch box.

I get stuck in a loop or weighing up the pros and cons of if what I’m packing is healthy and if it will keep them full.

Leading dietician Dr Mary McCreery has some advice on what we should and should not pack for our children and it will make the school year so much easier.

And here are some of Dr Mary McCreery healthy lunch suggestions from the Healthy Heroes programme perfect for your child’s lunch box.

BLT BLAST
• 2x slices 100% white bread
• 1x tablespoon light mayonnaise
• 2x grilled rashers
• 4x tomato slices
• Handful iceberg lettuce

Lunchbox extras: 2 yogurt tubes, a small container of fruit salad
Total energy content: 485kcals

HAM & CHEESE
• 2x slices wholemeal bread
• 2x teaspoons low fat butter
• 3x wafer-thin slices ham (40gms)
• 1x slice cheese (22gms)
• A handful of iceberg lettuce

Lunchbox extras: 200ml milk, 2 mandarins
Total energy content: 513kcals

TURKEY CAESAR
• 2 slices of chia wholegrain bread
• 3 slices of smoked wafer-thin turkey
• A handful of iceberg lettuce
Dressing made by mixing together:
• 1/2 tablespoon of grated parmesan cheese
• 1 tablespoon of light mayo
• 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
• 1 dash of Worcestershire sauce
• A little shake of salt and pepper

Lunchbox extras: 1 banana, 200ml flavoured milk
