Husband tells wife to stop breastfeeding their child because people will ‘judge’ her

A husband has told his wife to stop breastfeeding their child because he’s afraid that people will judge her.

The pair welcomed their daughter three years ago, and according to mum, she loves still being breastfed once a day.

However, the child’s dad thinks that his daughter is a bit old for the practice now and has been encouraging his wife to stop.

She took to parenting forum Mumsnet to ask whether she was being unreasonable for not wanting to seeing as her daughter likes it.

Under the username ‘fannyanddick’, she wrote:

“My husband mentioned that I shouldn’t tell anyone that I still breastfeed as they will judge now that our child is three and that I should think about stopping.

“I only feed her once a day but she loves it and doesn’t want to stop.

“Last time I said ‘you’re getting a bit big for milkies now’, she said that she loved it and didn’t want to get any bigger or grow up and more.

“What is the general view? Is she too old?”

Many users said that the mum shouldn’t stop if both she and her daughter were happy with the situation.

One person said: “I fed my youngest son until he self-weaned at 3.5yrs and will let current baby do the same. I don’t force it in anyone’s face and am very discreet.”

Another wrote: “Course not! Make sure your GP knows before they start writing you prescriptions, other than that it’s no-one’s business to have an opinion really.”

However, some thought that the dad had a point.

“I felt judged for weaning mine around two and a half. Go to another group of friends and I felt judged for still feeding past one. It’s all relative. Do what YOU feel is right, it’s your body,” suggested one person.

“Honestly I wouldn’t be telling people outside best friend group. I would never say or make comments but in my head I would think it’s a bit odd tbh,” admitted another.

It remains to be seen whether fannyanddick will take the Mumsnet users’ advice or if she will stop feeding her daughter for fear of being judged.
