“I’m Hungry!” Sound Familiar? Tried And Tested Snacks For Kids Whatever The Occasion

Trine Jensen-Burke

Brought to you by TUC.

If you have children, you will more than likely already be aware of how very suddenly they can go from perfectly happy to ravenously hungry, demanding to be fed right this minute.

Sounds familiar? Sometimes a little snack in between main meals are a must, and my years of motherhood have taught me one thing about hungry kids: Always have some snacks on hand:

In need of a little inspiration? Here are five of the favourite snacks going in my house:

1. Crackers and Cheese

This may sound a little grown up for serving to your kids when they come looking for a snack, but trust me; it will go down a treat.

Spread some TUC crackers out on a plate, mix up flavours like Paprika, Sour Cream and Onion, Bacon and the regular flavoured ones, leaving room in the middle for cheese and some fruit and veggies too. Kids love when they get to assemble things themselves, so leave out a few different kinds of cheese (a great choice when hunger strikes, as they are full of protein) and things like grapes, olives, slices of pepper and maybe even some cherry tomatoes.

2. Creepy Crawlies On Crackers

This snack is perfect when my little people have other little people over to play and I need to serve them a little something to keep energy levels (and moods) up.

I simply fill a plate with original TUC crackers, spread some cream cheese on top, and use grapes cup in half and raisins to create little creepy crawly creatures on top of the crackers. Simple, tasty and fun.

3. Crackers and Dips

This one is always a winner in my house, and the dips are a great way of getting your kids to eat some veggies – without them knowing they are eating veggies. Motherhood is all about clever trickery, guys.

For this quick snack, I just spread out some TUC crackers on a plate, and put a couple of bowls of different dips out to go with – and let everyone help themselves.

Some of our favourite dips to serve with crackers are:

Guacamole – avocados are full of good fats, so a great choice for growing kids, and tastes great with TUC Bacon or Sour Cream and Onion.

Hummus – buy or make your own, and try different flavoured ones, they all taste terrific with any TUC flavour. Chickpeas are full of fibre and proteins, so a great way avoid hunger pangs.

Salsa – again, buy it if you are pressed for time, or make your own and adjust the level of spicy-ness to what your kids like and can handle. Salsa is the perfect dip for the new Paprika flavoured TUC.

4. Peanut Butter and Banana Cracker Sandwich

You know what they say; simpler simply is always better. And with this quick snack, both my kids are fed in no time – without a word of “but I don’t like that…”

Peanut butter and sliced banana is such a classic combination, and served between two crunchy TUC crackers, it is even better.

All you do is top a cracker with a fine layer of peanut butter (smooth or crunchy, that is up to you), one slice of banana, then finish with a cracker on top, and your yummy little sandwich is ready to be enjoyed.

These are a total winner in my house when I need to serve up a quick snack to keep us going in between activities and outings. The best part? They take no time to scramble together and taste so good. Try making them with different flavoured TUC, the paprika and bacon ones add a whole new flavour.

Ingredients
  • 10 TUC crackers
  • 10 tsp pizza sauce
  • 10 thin slices of pizza pepperoni
  • ½-3/4 cup shredded cheese

Instructions

Place crackers on a baking tray, top with sauce, pepperoni (or ham) and cheese. Put under the pre-heated grill for three-four minutes and voila; pizza crackers so good you’d be forgiven to want to eat these for dinner.
