Ooops.
We are all guilty of the “ahh it’ll be grand” approach when it comes to well, almost everything. But food is a whole different ballgame – from freezing out flavour to changing the texture to potentially giving yourself food poisoning (it is severely grim), food is an area where extra precautions need to be taken and knowing how and where to store certain items is essential.
So to help refresh any lingering thoughts as to whether or not we can put an avocado along with its pals in the freezer, we have created a list of seven common products that for one reason or another should NOT be stored in the freezer.
1. Avocados
It looses its soft centre and creamy texture – it freezes quite like cheese and if you have ever eaten thawed cheese, you’ll know how gack it becomes.
2. Coffee
Popping coffee in and out of the freezer continuously, will destroy the texture and flavour and it will absorb all the freezer smells and ain’t nobody got time for that.
3. Milk
Milk thaws lumpy… END OF.
4. Eggs
The gooey centre when frozen expands and cracks the egg – meaning a leaky mess in your fridge and a waste of eggs *sigh*.
5. Ketchup
When frozen, ketchup separates and the water lifts… it looks disgusting and unappetising.
6. Yogurt
Once again you’ll notice a separation and then a thaw into a curdle. Vom.
7. Spices
Always a no no, spices do not freeze well and you will destroy any flavours.
Note to self: Remove any of these items from the freezer immediately. Sorted.
