The Cronut is dead. Long live the Macaronut!

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Newsflash: the Cronut is well and truly over. The flaky illegitimate child of the croissant and custard donut has been ousted from its No. 1 spot by a bolder, better treat.

Oh yes. The most fashionable confection to be Instagrammed with these days is the Macaronut: a delectable macaron/donut hybrid.

The deep-fried piece of heaven first popped up at Pix Patisserie in Portland, Oregon, where you could already get your hands on flavours of macaron as diverse as Cardamon Grapefruit, Coconut Curry, Maple Bacon and Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Owner Cheryl Wakerhauser makes just 50 macaronuts (a deep-fried macaron covered in a light fluffy batter) per day, in just 12 flavours.

As far as we know, the Macaronut hasn’t landed on our shores yet, but if YOU should spot one at your local bakery, kindly let us know (immediately) on Twitter @herfamilydotie or email katie.mythen@herfamily.ie.
