This Clever Hack Will Save You Money In the Kitchen

Katie Mythen-Lynch

The average Irish family loses around €700 on food waste every year -that’s about 80kg per person. Whether you’re meticulous about using up every last carrot or not, even the thriftiest domestic goddess has a split bag of rice or a icing sugar packet that won’t close lurking somewhere in their kitchen.

Imagine the money you’d save if you never had to throw anything away because of packaging problems, for instance.

This genius tutorial by mum blogger Learn to Grow shows us how to seal a plastic food storage bag tightly using a plastic bottle top. It offers two solutions: it’s a great way to keep food fresh in your kitchen cupboards and it’s also a neat use for old bottles and containers before they hit the recycling bin.

We’ve been using this on large bags of rice and store cupboard essentials such as beans, peas, flour and sugar. It not only keeps food fresher for longer, it also makes it easier to pour and store; that’s a win/win!
