Coronation Street boss hints at a ‘heartbreaking’ storyline this Christmas

Keeley Ryan

Christmas is a time of celebration, family and good will.

Unless your a character in soapland, when the holiday season is actually full of breakups, drama and death.

With a little less than three months to go until Christmas, new Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod is already setting the stage for Santa’s arrival.

And he wants as much of a “Christmassy Christmas” as possible.

According to Digital Spy, he said:

“The seeds of the stories for Christmas are in next week’s episodes. Without giving too much away. I wanted it to be a Christmassy Christmas.

“Obviously there’s a history in the soap of trying to go and do the Angie and Den Christmas where it’s all acrimony and divorce papers and vitriol.

“That’s not really my preference, when you sit down as you try and digest your stuffing balls and sprouts, you need it to be warm and lighthearted in places and you need it to wreak of Christmas.”

Although that doesn’t mean there won’t be any drama.

MacLeod added:

“It’ll have some big, heart-breaking stories within that, it’ll have a big shock at the end and hopefully it’ll be a surprising payoff to those stories that you’ll see the inception of next week.”

The long-running soap is currently preparing for their big October week, which is set to include two weddings, a life-threatening car crash and a death – as well as the return of Nick Tilsley and the start of Sinead Tinker’s tragic storyline.

Basically, it’s going to be a busy few months in Weatherfield.
