Corrie’s Katie McGlynn on what’s next for Sinead in heartbreaking cancer storyline

“I’m kind of excited.”

Coronation Street’s Katie McGlynn has opened up about what’s next for her soap character in the devastating cervical cancer storyline.

The 25-year-old plays fan favourite Sinead Tinker, who has had a heartbreakingly tough time on the long-running soap as of late. The Underworld machinist was diagnosed with cervical cancer earlier this year, shortly after finding out that she was expecting a child with her then-fiancé, Daniel.

Katie spoke to Her about everything from her first thoughts when she found out about the storyline to why she thinks Sinead chose to keep her diagnosis a secret from Daniel – as well as what her Christmas wish for the mum-to-be would be.

On finding out about the storyline, she said:

“It sounds sadistic, but [when I found out] I was happy – as Katie – as I finally had a major storyline to contend with.

“I’ve felt like with my career on Coronation Street, I haven’t had something this big – and while there’s been some pressure because it’s such a big storyline, it’s been great [reception] overall.

“Everyone’s been lovely and sweet to me, I’ve had people coming up and sharing their own personal stories. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer in some way.

“The storyline has touched so many people – you don’t realise how many people you can help, and [Coronation Street] has given me the platform to do that.”

Sinead initially made the decision to keep her cancer diagnosis a secret from her husband, Daniel.  And while her diagnosis has now come to light, Katie said she reckons there was a reason behind her character’s reluctance to share the heartbreaking news.

She said:

“I think that Sinead has been thinking about her child constantly, without even considering her own health.

“Then when it finally sunk in, she didn’t want to tell Daniel – it’s hard enough going through something like that, she didn’t want the love of her life going through the turmoil as well.

“She’s been doing the best that she can, though.”

Katie also dropped a huge hint about what’s in Sinead’s future – and how it’s something she’s nervous but “kind of excited for.”

She continued:

“It can be very challenging to keep a story under wraps. [But] I guess with these types of storylines, it will always come out in the end – it’s such a sensitive storyline that viewers will want the option to watch it play out or not.

“I can’t say much [about Sinead’s future], but I will have to give birth. I’m kind of excited for, but not also kind of not excited about.”

Daniel and Sinead are due to celebrate their first Christmas as a married couple this year, and Katie said that there’s just one thing she would want for her character this year.

She said:

“I’d wish for her to get the family that she deserves, she’s been through a lot.”

Katie was speaking at the launch of the BPerfect Cosmetics Christmas set in Boots, Liffey Valley. The limited edition gift set will be available in Boots stores across the country.
