Prince William’s adorable nickname came from Princess Diana

Cathy Donohue

This is so lovely.

Princess Diana died in 1997 and at the time her sons William and Harry were aged 15 and 12 respectively.

It’s clear that both of her sons had a close relationship with their mum and her death in a car accident was a massive tragedy.

Both men always speak fondly of their mother and it turns out that Willam had a very special nickname from his mum.

None other than Wombat.

Ye, according to Hello! magazine, Princess Diana used to call her eldest son Wombat.

In an interview way back in 2007, William shared the sweet nickname chatting with Matt Lauer, a news anchor who used to work with NBC.

“It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far.

“But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal. So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do”.

Awww, stop and no William, you don’t look like a wombat but we very much appreciate the sweet memory.

In case you didn’t know, he also had a different name back in college and according to reports, he used to go by the name of Steve.

Apparently, this was so that he could keep his identity as a prince under wraps but we’re pretty sure that people managed to figure it out all the same.
