Here’s some wedding day advice you might not have heard before

Some of these are quite unusual.

Somethings to remember for your wedding day.

A few months before my wedding, I asked a number of previous brides and grooms what advice they would give to people who are getting married.

More specifically, any unusual advice they received for their wedding day. Now, since I’ve had my big day, I’m back with a new list from my experience, and also from some other recent brides and grooms around the Her office.

Keep mementos

You have put so much effort into planning each and every detail of your wedding day and everyone gets to enjoy that. Take the ceremony booklet for example, the bride and groom don’t even see them on the day so make sure you grab one at one point or tell someone close to you to hold on to one for you. And don’t forget the menus, you’ll want to remember what you had on the day for years to come.

Similarly to all the little mementos of the day, keep the speeches.

You will be all ears when the speeches come around, but trust me the following day, and the day after that, you will hardly be able to remember what was said by your dad, or your new spouse. So, be sure to snap up the speeches that have been read out before they’re chucked in the bin.

Bring chalk

If you don’t have stain remover, chalk is a handy substitute to cover any stains on white shirts or your wedding dress/shoes. It won’t be a permanent fix but it will help to cover any nasty stains you put up along the way.

Buy a handbag

Invest in a cute bridal clutch. It doesn’t even have to be white – I wore gold. You can keep lipstick and anything necessary in it. It’s also a handy place to keep the room key and anything else you need on the day or for the night.

Leave your phone at home

This one especially applies to the groom or bride waiting at the top of the aisle. You will be surprised by how many people try to call you for directions to the church or venue. Give your phone to the best man/maid of honour or just leave it at home. It’s also a distraction and the one day you need to keep your head out of your phone and just enjoy the day.

Drink bottled beers, not pints

This one is for the pint drinkers. You will be offered a lot of drinks throughout the day, so to avoid getting too drunk you can carry around the same bottle of beer all day and night and no one will know. Also, they’re easier to dispose of if you get bought a lot of them.

Handy basket

Keep a basket or box under the top table to stash anything you or the bridesmaids want to keep safe, flat shoes, spare makeup, perfume etc. It’s a handy way to keep things out of view in a discreet way.
