This Instagram account will make you think twice about calories

You'll spend days scrolling.

This is mind-blowing…

We’ve all been there – standing in a supermarket, holding up two similar bars of chocolate and studying their nutritional labels down to the very last calorie.

But does counting calories alone make sense? One food and fitness guru on Instagram doesn’t think so.

Lucy Mountain, AKA @thefashionfitnessfoodie, has been sharing photos of side-by-side comparisons on her account to make the point that being healthy isn’t as simple as counting calories.

Alongside the above photo of a handful of almonds alongside a handful of sweets, she wrote;

“Although I’m fully aware that a handful of almonds contains lots of wonderful nutrients that would keep me fuller for longer, some days (no matter whether I’m looking to gain, maintain or lose weight) I’ll choose to eat sweets or a chocolate bar as a snack.

“Why? Because when the majority of my diet has consisted of well-balanced food that’s full of micronutrients, I have no issue eating something thats less so just because I love the taste of it.”

She also reminds her followers (all 130,000 of them) that if you are trying to limit your energy intake, small tweaks can make a big difference.

This shot shows two identical looking avocado bagels, but they’re very different when it comes to calories.

“Left bagel: Half an avocado, plain bagel, 30g Cottage Cheese, 5g Toasted oats, 0.5 tbsp Lemon juice⠀

“Right bagel: One whole avocado, plain bagel, 30g Feta Cheese, 10g Toasted sesame seeds, 0.5 tbsp Coconut Oil,” she explains.

As for the two dinners below? The only difference is the oil they’re cooked in.

The one on the left was cooked with a light olive spray while the one on the right was cooked with a tablespoon of olive oil.

Lucy’s posts are a handy reminder that small changes can make a difference and that it’s ok to enjoy a treat now again.
