The Baby-Sitters Club is officially back in business.

Netflix have announced a TV adaptation of The Baby-Sitters Club.

According to The Hollywood Reporterthe dramedy has been given a straight-to-series order – and will have 10 episodes.

The original book series focused on a group of friends in Stoneybrook Connecticut, after they set up a baby-sitting service.

It focused on teaching young readers about things like dealing with family issues, how to deal with competitive situations, lessons to overcome jealousy and all about relationships.

The Netflix series – which is going to be aimed at kids, teens and adults – is said to be planning to explore themes around divorce, racism and belonging.

Melissa Cobb, vp kids and family at Netflix, said:

“The themes of The Baby-Sitters Club still resonate 30 years after the original book series was released, and there has never been a more opportune time to tell an aspirational story about empowering young female entrepreneurs.

“Together with Ann M. Martin and the team at Walden Media, our ambition is to contemporize the storylines and adventures of this iconic group of girlfriends to reflect modern-day issues.”

Martin said that she hoped the series would “inspire a new generation of readers and leaders everywhere.”

She said:

“I’m amazed that there are so many passionate fans of The Baby-Sitters Club after all these years, and I’m honored to continue to hear from readers — now grown, who have become writers, editors, teachers, librarians, filmmakers — who say that they see a reflection of themselves in the characters of Kristy and her friends.

“So I’m very excited about the forthcoming series on Netflix, which I hope will inspire a new generation of readers and leaders everywhere.”

The book series was originally penned by Ann M. Martin, before it was taken on by ghost writers.

It ran for 14 years, beginning in 1986, with more than 200 novels published.
