My daughter chose me over Peppa Pig yesterday and honestly, I’m still smug

Melissa Carton

There are two words in a child’s vocabulary that parents dread, Peppa Pig.

My two-year-old is absolutely obsessed with the pint-sized cartoon character and it drives me crazy.

She’s so bold, so rude and has a habit of jumping in dirty puddles which of course, my daughter has now started to do. While wearing her canvas shoes, just gorgeous altogether.

There isn’t a day that goes by that she doesn’t insist on watching Peppa and to be honest, I sometimes give in.

When we went on holiday to Cork during the summer, I had to break out the phone and stick some Peppa on YouTube when we couldn’t find her on the TV.

So you can imagine I was very taken aback when my toddler chose me over Peppa yesterday afternoon.

Peppa Pig

I suffer from migraines and even when I try my best to stay hydrated and keep away from strong smells, they tend to arrive unannounced.

Yesterday morning, I could feel one coming on and after giving my daughter breakfast, I put on Peppa Pig (at her usual request) and went into the back sitting room.

It wasn’t long before her little face appeared beside me – I thought that maybe she wanted a drink and was about to move when she climbed up beside me on the chair.

She lay down on the sofa and snuggled into me, chatting away and rubbing my head.

Nothing and nobody gets in the way of her Peppa time and I couldn’t believe she was missing her favourite show to come and lie beside me on the sofa.

I won’t lie, I felt pretty honoured.

Toddlers often live in their own little worlds, their priority lists are small but they rarely ever change.

Any parent of a toddler will know that being chosen over Queen Peppa is quite an accomplishment and it doesn’t happen often.

I’m currently basking in my tiny victory against the most annoying cartoon I’ve ever come across, although I know it’s a temporary thing.

I know that if I were at home today I would be forgotten about in favour of Miss Pig. However, I’m at work, not at home, and will continue to feel smug about the fact that I came out on top in the parent/Peppa Pig battle.
