Folens goes green with the introduction of new recyclable Christmas annuals

Melissa Carton

Christmas just got greener.

Anyone who went to primary school in Ireland will remember the Folens annuals.

Come Christmas time they would be handed around the class and we would all get stuck into the quizzes and puzzles immediately.

First published in 1970 it’s a fond tradition that has passed down from generation to generation and now it’s even better as our favourite annuals become eco-friendly.

Each of the annuals, entitled Sugradh, Spraoi, Siamsa and Sonas are now 100 per cent recyclable and PEFC certified, made of materials taken from sustainably managed forests and controlled sources.

Alongside being recyclable, Folens is also encouraging children to be more environmentally aware themselves through the content of the annuals.

From information on single use plastics, the importance of bees and pollination, endangered animals across the globe and tips on DIY crafts and upcycling, there is something for every age group.

The last couple of years I’ve had great fun reliving my childhood by taking the quizzes with my son.

Understandably his favourite part of sharing this experience is when he beats me.

On top of going green Folens continues to roll out their Folens Christmas Annual Charity Campaign, donating thousands of copies of Sonas, Siamsa, Spraoi and Sugradh to children’s hospitals across Ireland for the eighth year.

As well as this donation, Folens Publishers are offering schools the opportunity to obtain additional annuals, which they can donate to a local charity of their choice.
