One mum’s band-aid experience shows just how fast kids grow up

Sound familiar?

Realising your little one is all grown up and no longer needs you there for every little thing is an upsetting fact for any parent.

Quinn Kelly experienced this exact feeling recently when her nine-year-old showed her that he had grown up and the catalyst for this realisation was none other than a band-aid (or plaster depending on what you refer to it as).

Texas woman Quinn, who is the mother of four boys, previously shared her tale in a ‘mini-blog’ on her Facebook page, explaining that she went to give her nine-year-old a Star Wars plaster and he asked for a plain one instead.

An extract from the post reads:

“But you always like the designed ones when you have a boo boo?” I question and demand all at once.

First it was Elmo. Then curious George. Then Transformers. Then Star Wars. I flashback to the corresponding birthdays that followed with these same themes.

“Yeah, mom. Maybe when I was four I liked the designs.” He smiles back with his dimples on full display.

“But you are still….”

I stop and pause for a moment, but he fills in the blank for me.

“Nine. I’m nine now, Mom. So do you mind if I just take the plain one?”

This comment made Quinn realise that her nine-year-old was growing up before her eyes but just when she thought that he didn’t need her anymore, he asked for help putting it on his toe.

“Mom, will you wrap it around my toe? I still need your help with that part.”

“And then I hug him again.

“He may be too old for characters, but he still needs me for the wrap. And I’ll take it”.

Other parents have commented on Quinn’s post, saying that they can completely relate to her experience and that it caused more than a few tears as many people identified with her words.
