How to teach problem solving skills to young children of any age

Melissa Carton

Young children can often get frustrated when they come up against obstacles.

Dealing with the problems life can throw at them can be at times overwhelming, so as parents it’s our job to help them learn how to address their problems.

Below are some tips on how you can teach problem solving skills to young children of all ages.

Created by Big Life Journal, this chart can help you in helping your child with emotions and difficulties that they don’t understand.

Even as adults it can be hard for us to deal with problems, and for children even small things like homework they don’t comprehend or a lost toy can seem like the end of the world.

The chart begins at age three and follows all the way up to age eleven, but there is no reason why these skills can’t also be used with older children or teens.

Talking with them and helping them to figure out and put a name to the emotions that they are feeling can make a huge difference. Also knowing that they can voice these problems with you will let them know that they are not alone and that sometimes it’s ok not to feel ok.
