Man (30s) dies after getting into difficulty in River Barrow in Co. Carlow

He was swimming in the river with his friends last night.

A man in his 30s has sadly passed away after getting into difficulty in the River Barrow in Co. Carlow.

The tragedy unfolded on Wednesday, August 10th.

It is believed the man was swimming in the river shortly after 9.20 pm on Wednesday night.

He got into difficulty shortly after entering the water.

The man, believed to be from the area, was swimming with his friends before the tragic accident happened.

His friends and locals attempted to save him but struggled to remove him from the water.

One man managed to pull him out of the river and onto some nearby decking.

Unfortunately, efforts to resuscitate the man failed. He was then pronounced dead at the scene.

Locals said the heartbreaking incident has shaken the town.

One local man told The Independent that Gardaí arrived at the scene shortly after the man was removed from the water.

“A number of gardaí arrived and tried their best to revive him. They were trying for a long time but he didn’t respond.”

The man praised emergency services for attempting to save the man.

He also said the public should keep the man who pulled the deceased man from the water in their thoughts.

Locals praised him for his heroic act.

“I hope that everybody prays for the man who pulled out the (deceased man) from the river.”
